Natalie MacLean Based in Ottawa, Natalie MacLean has an international reputation as wine writer, speaker and judge. An accredited sommelier, she is a member of the National Capital Sommelier Guild, the Wine Writers Circle and several French wine societies. Natalie's book Red, White and Drunk All Over: A Wine-Soaked Journey from Grape to Glass takes her readers behind the scenes of the international wine world-exploring its history, visiting its most evocative places, and meeting its most charismatic personalities.

Here are some interesting interviews that Nat has done with magazines and newspapers recently, including those about matching wine with beef bourguignon with Chicago Tribune and the Orlando Sentinel, wine and chocolate matching with the Dallas Morning News, wines for first dates and mature relationships with Northern Virginia Magazine, food and wine trends in 2008 with Winnipeg Free Press, the Telegraph-Journal, The Hamilton Spectator, The Chatham Daily News and The Niagara Falls Review, and somehow I got thrown into the February issue of More Magazine for their Top 40 Women list, presumably because they save one spot for the woman with the greatest alcoholic tolerance in the country.

Enjoy our excerpt from Nat’s 50 Ways to Keep Your Lover this Valentine’s Day it’s all about delicious ways to pair wine and chocolate.

  • 2006 Domaine Allimant-Laugner Pinot Gris A.C. Alsace, France – Alsace: VC: The small Domaine Allimant-Laugner property produces world-beater wines with a variety of grapes, including this fine Pinot Gris. Recognized for their intensity of flavour and superb balance, Allimant-Laugner has a reputation as a winemaker's winemaker. My note: An amazingly flavorful wine with floral and citrus aromas. Pair with: Fish, seafood dishes. 61317 12% D 750 mL $16.85 Score: 90/100. Best Value White Wine
  • 2005 Henschke Julius Riesling Eden Valley, South Australia: A lively riesling with aromatic notes of citrus, lime and minerals. Closed with a screwcap. Pair with: seafood, pork, chicken. 945055 13% XD 750 mL $36.75 Score: 92/100. Favorite White Wine
  • 2005 Viña Ventisquero Yali Reserve Carménère Colchagua Valley, Chile: VC: The Yali Valley is home to Ventisquero's winery and many of their vineyards. While this wine is mostly Carménère, the winemakers blend in 15% Cabernet Sauvignon for added structure and complexity. The result is a rich and multi-faceted wine with plenty of blueberry and strawberry aromas and flavours enhanced with notes of coffee, chocolate and tobacco. My note: This red wine has notes of coffee liqueur and blackberry. Amazing value from the land of great value! Pair with: cheese plate, provolone, brie, chevre. 48306 14% XD 750 mL $11.90 Score: 89/100. Best Value Red Wine
  • 2004 Château Moulin St-Georges AC St-Émilion, France – Bordeaux: This wine has gorgeous layers of cassis, plums and smoke notes. Pair with: steak, stew. 671875 14% XD 750 mL $56.00 Score: 93/100. Favorite Red Wine
