When More is Just Too Much

As a society we believe that more is better and this tends to spill over into our daily lives.

... the more I diet, the more cosmetic procedures I have, the better I will look.
... the more clients I market to, the more words in my brochures/websites the more business I will get.
... the more I do myself the more I will get done.

The more books I read, if I take another class/workshop I will have the perfect life and a successful business.

Jill Crossland CoachingThis ongoing process of analyzing, researching and seeking advice & information can become all consuming. While there is nothing wrong with 'doing' we need to balance that with actually 'being' present in our own lives.

Take a look at your book shelves, I bet there is a copy of

  • Chicken Soup... for the something
  • Simple Abundance
  • The Secret
  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
  • And you have probably recently added Tolle's "A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose".

I am sure that they held some pertinent eye opening passages but how much of the book that you plowed through do you remember today? Bear in mind that the world of self-help has become a profitable business.

Do I recommend these books and others? Yes, I even send the titles as resources to clients as part of my coaching service. Do I include them as the answer to life's problems? No, they are merely tools. They are something to have on hand for when you need them. All the information that you require is probably in a specific chapter or two.

It is in the actual living of life, through taking chances or trying the road less traveled that we grow into the person that we are truly meant to be. The signposts, clear insights and general guidance will be provided along the way, we just have to be there in the moment. It also doesn't hurt to seek out and listen to the wisdom of the previous generations. We tend to forget what a great lesson grandma's life really is and that was before there were self-help books.
